What Does Degen Mean in Crypto?
Degen — short for degenerate — is crypto slang for someone who takes big, fast, high-risk bets, usually on brand-new meme coins, often without much research. It is used half as an insult and half as a badge of honour.
Where the word comes from
It started as gambling slang for a reckless bettor and moved into crypto with DeFi yield farming, then meme coins. Calling a trade a degen play means it is a long shot with a big possible payoff and a high chance of going to zero.
Related slang: aping in (buying fast without checking), the trenches (trading the newest launches on Pump.fun and similar launchpads), and degen hours (late-night trading when narratives move fast).
How degens usually lose money
The newest coins are where snipers, bundled launches and rugs are most common. Buying in the first minutes often means buying from wallets that got in at the launch price and are waiting to sell.
A few checks cut a lot of that risk: who bought in the launch block and still holds, whether the mint and freeze authority are revoked, and how concentrated the top holders are.
